Leaving Washington DC behind with a few days delay after hurricane Sandy passed, I finally arrived in São Paulo last Friday. I will spend the next weeks with Padre Cyzo Assis Lima and his community. 26 years ago he founded the “Fraternidad Palavra e Missao” which is helping various neighborhoods and especially children in need all over the country. Hurricane Sandy
Hoping to escape the arrival of the big storm here in Washington DC, I booked an earlier flight for Monday morning. As it seems it was not early enough. All major airlines started to cancel flights beginning from Sunday afternoon, at least throughout Monday. Currently it is expected to ease off again on Tuesday. Major flooding and power out are expected. I don’t like it at all! Continue reading “Hurricane Sandy”
Edit 11
It felt like going to work for my first day, when I joined Joanne for a day to experience her work as a producer in the ABC News Studio in Washington DC. It was the Sunday day shift and when we arrived around 10 o’clock it started rather quiet, so she used the time to give me a first look around. I got a peek at various IT systems in use, the archive and the edit rooms. Unfortunately, since the downsize of the ABC news organisation in 2010 no recording studios are in use anymore in Washington DC, so not much to see on this side of television. Wide views
2.732 miles of driving in 21 days was the result of the journey together with Lisi, Lena and Stefan through California, Arizona and Utah. After leaving the shiny and loud (at least on the main avenues) Las Vegas behind us, we drove straight north to the magnificent Bryce Canyon, only realizing then that we will spend the next seven days roughly 2.000 meters about sea level – it got much cooler, at least over night. Then the journey took us south to Grand Canyon and Sedona from where we headed back to Los Angeles. Continue reading “Wide views”
Round the World Ticket
When I started inquiring about my flight tickets in September last year I had several options to choose from. The first recommendation from the travel agency I contacted to get detailed information was to book the flights individually. If it is properly done it could save you a little bit of money and is rather flexible in the selections of the locations. However, their proposal to fly from Osaka to Honolulu via Auckland scared me off. Continue reading “Round the World Ticket”
Reunion in L.A.
Time is really going by fast and it is already eight month since I left Vienna last December. Travelling on my own is a great experience, however it felt good to finally hug my little sister Lisi again who came to the the U.S. west coast with Lena and Stefan. Continue reading “Reunion in L.A.”
Limitations in my head
How often do we use the words “I have to” as a reason to do something, we don’t really want to do? For so many tasks in our life we accept that there is no other way of doing it, let alone the possibility of not doing it at all. They seem to be just given. Looking at myself it astonishes me where I set my own limitations and why I often believe in them so strong, that I’m not able to overcome them, even with little things. Continue reading “Limitations in my head”
The island of Miyajima
Yes, I admit it. I love Japan 😉 For me it is amazing to travel here: so many lovely people, so much delicious food, so many little details which make me smile. However, in terms of beautiful places it is rather a set back compared to Australia and New Zealand. There is hardly a view which is not obstructed by a high voltage power line, a road or another sign of civilization. The cities feel rather exchangeable and maybe I was in the wrong spots at the wrong time, but the colors of the country never got totally clear. Those moments …
Sometimes I have those bright moments of awareness: Yes, I’m really travelling!
Today I’m sitting on five different local trains for about five hours trying not to miss the right station for my the next one, bringing me closer to my target, everything only in Japanese. However, I don’t feel lost at all. It just feels good, real. It makes me smile. When I was on the bus in Australia heading towards middle of nowhere, realizing that most people I know are upside down at the moment (at least from my perspective), or when I first smelled the fresh air of New Zealand it came over me as well.
A good feeling! It is like when you eat an apple and suddenly realize how tasty it is. You let nothing distract you. You just enjoy and you are eating the best apple of the world at this moment 😉
